Film Idea- The Secret

Zelda Okrhiana realizes that she has special powers at the age of 7, where she witnesses her parents death. This stays with her, so at the age of 18 she questions why they died. By then she has left her foster-home to fend for herself. By then the Order is planning to attack her now that she is unarmed, because they need her special powers to survive their existence.  However another pact knows about this happening, so they send out a guard, Leonardo Peach  to protect her. As time goes by she falls into many traps that would kill her, however the guard is always there. She finally bumps into him, a relationship forms and he is able to tell her who he is and what she is. This then develops unto her fighting of the pact with her powers and realizing her inner-self and her parents promises.

Film Treatment- The Secret, A short film or Trailer

Film Trailer

At the start of this trailer the will be a sound of a shushing noise which will play for 5 seconds before hard beat music sounds, with an extreme close up of a stricken girls face in the frame. It willi cut to the next shot of a film review on a black background, before it cuts to a long shot of a couple,(man and wife) being shot and them falling down, however I would only get the sound in and exposure to a lot of light in the frame so nothing can be seen. Afterwards there is quick cut to the woman's hand falling to the floor, as this happens the music descends so that it is on low volume and the Zelda, the girl, screams "noo!!" Cuts to the girl running, falling, this is shot with the camera being hand held to create tension and suspicion, especially when she is running. Then the black frame appears and we seen a pair of hands being clasped together. We then cut to the girls face then a mans, both with promising and anxious looks on their faces, this helps the audience understand their feelings. We hear a voice over of the man, Leonardo during these shots, saying "Are you ready?" Next shot consists of them jumping off something, however I thought I would get a low angle so that it seems that that they are jumping from a high angle, even though they would be jumping from a short height.

Miracle Fish- Short Film

This short film is simple but effective. The main topic seems to curve around the fact of "being careful of what you wish for" as this young boy of 8 realises in the film. As I was watching it, I began to realise the different uses of shots, sound and text was used to create more of an abstract feeling towards the film as its genre was steeped in Sci-fi. I realised there is a strange twist at the end which makes the  piece even more interesting.

Mesmerize me -Short Film

This short film has a very well thought through plot that explores love and horror. It is about a girl who is troubled with a death of a former boyfriend set in to 1800s. She sees her dead boyfriend even though others can not see him and her mother introducers her to a hypnotist. She eventually falls for this man, even though she still is not over the death of her other half. I find that this short film is long but it is very structured and easy to understand. I would like my film to have the same qualities for this one

Theories used in the Film Industry

Hypodermic Theories-

This is when the media is putting out a message which the audience is not prone to challenge or discuss the matter displayed. This was generally shown at the start of the 1920s where, by this time the war was starting to have an impact on the people. In this case, a form of propaganda was shown when women were sent out to help work in the factories. The message of this was very much accepted by the audience at the time especially as it could not be debated, however this type of theory is still used to make others aware of a serious matter.

Users and Gratifications Theory

There are four main reasons why people would use the media, which was introduced by Blulmer and katz. They state that "...not what does the media do to people, but what do people do with the media."

-Entertainment: It is a type of media text which is enjoyable and an escape from thier normal life.

Representation on disability

All throughout the piece of drama, I find that there are various devices which are there to show the type of representation that it is.

At the start we see the door opening to reveal the girl who is nervously smiling and her face slightly changing as the camera goes onto the boy in the wheelchair then slowly tilts to the man who is standing behind. This may show that her regular customers do not tend to be guys in wheelchairs, this is also shown when they all go into the flat and the camera pans across the falt. We do not see any ramps or disabled acsess anywhere, which also carries the alarming fact of this situation. When the camera takes the view of the flat, the colour of the walls are a burgundy red and white, which may reflect the emotions expressed when both the disabled boy and blonde lady exchange their convesations. The type of objects which are displayed around the flat may show the type of personality of this woman and how she approaches others. The dependency on disabled people are seen to be to strong as it is not normal for disabled guys to be so keen on phoneing a call girl. In this case, Blake has done it all by himself, and this is seen as shock especially when Blake admitted phoning and his dad surprised by the fact he was able to do it.When the camera is on he boy, we get a medium shot  of him while we only get a shot of the fathers legs, this could suggest the power and control that the father has over his so, includong th efact that he disabled,. Although this is not an excuse, it could just mean that the father wants to be protectivbe of his son and doesn't want anything to happen to him.

After we follow the son and father to the bed where his father lifts the boy from the chair, we have a longshot of this so that the audience knows the situation of where he is in. Moreover, the father could be seen as the 'helper' as he does help the boy overcome his duties through life. However, I also find that the girl is also the 'helper' because she somehows hepls him overcome his desires and maybe his despreate wish even though he might never be able to be in this stae hence the diability. While this happens, the camera goes to the girl who is hiding behind a wall, we see a long shot of her, nervously waiting, it could show the state in which she is in as she is the main object here because she may have not experienced many sitautions like this especially with a disabled boy. When its the time for the dad to leave, his reactions are nervous and fidegty, just goes to show that he has never experienced this before and the fact that he is letting his son do what he wants may show how any parent might feel in these types of situations especially when they have a disabled son/daughter who needs caring.

The camera zooms in when she goes to bring him the drink, could give a sense of urgency which is intended for the audience to feel. We see her delicately placing the drink down, showing that she is firm and soft lady, definatley a person who can care for disabled people and this goes on when she helps him with his drink, shows that he is dependent on others. We go on to a medium shot of her while she helps take off his shirt. When it is off, we get to see him probably and this is a craned shot we have a high point view of his chest which the height of it is not normal, this brings to light how serious his condition is.  The stereotype here is that disabled boys are not seen to want this kind of experience as the thought of it seems embarrassing. Furthermore, the preferred text is that the author wants the audience to understand how pressurised and stereotypical people can be when dealing with the issue of disability. They want to show that disabled people have the same right as any other person even if in this situation they are seen to be less able to do anything.

Analysis on the Tv Drama - Hotel Babylon(unfinished)

How does the representation of ethnicity show on the Tv drama extract of Babylon?

All throughout the Tv drama, Babylon, I find many devices which are shown to represent ethnicity.
At the start of the drama we have a black man serving a white man who is laying down on a chair, in a robe. We clearly have an example here of a representation, espically as the man who is serving is black. The uniform that he has on, is sleek and formal defineately appropriate for the type of area that he is in. The actual message going out could mean that the types of behaviour used, espically when there was a lot of prejudice against blacks we have a slight example shown here, but the difference is that it is in the modern times. We then see him walking away but his posture and stance can suggest the type of personality he has, espically  when stereotypes of black man are not generally seen in this way, involving the type of walk that displays.  The background of the hotel at the start is shown to be bright and bold, this somehow shows the kind of hotel it is and how its customers might be. We then have the man in the suit walking up untill another black man climbs out from the pool, looking idealistically ghetto, not fitting in with the hotel style; a vey unique way of making the scene seem unrealistic- we would not find a man like this in a posh hotel, hence the use of a countertype as here we are judging about how black men are seen to be and where they are supposed to be. The response of the worker is somehow unexpected as he does not talk like his friend does and does not seem interested in the information which is being told to him. This is somehow a countertype which is out of place because the man starts talking in a very relaxed informal way which is very out of the blue, but it helps the audience understand the kind of background he comes from and the kind of influence which has been present. The fact that it is seen as a medium shot would help because it gives more informaton about the sceneary and the character, espically what they are wearing and how the postion themselves. In this case, we get to have the idea of both characters personality through their body language. We clearly know that these two men have evidently two different interets and tastes which may represent the two different sides of people who are 'black'. Throughout this there is a sort of relaxed tune streaming in the backgound which sets the scene, ultimately be a non-diegtic sound that goes on throughout the piece, may be there to suggest the theme that the director wants to create. The editing present from shot to shot run smoothly as we get over shoulder shots of the men, I find that this is a indivdiual perspective from one character to another, creating a sense of personality for the two men.
The background of these two characters in the hotel are very sleek and calmful, with purple and white  coloured walls, this may suggest that these specfic colours reflect the characters feelings especially the guy who came out from the pool.

We then have a sharp transition to a two maids rolling in a chemicals trolley, with the music slightly changing to a geedy upbeat tune, signifies the change of characters and situation and could give a hint to the kind of characters displayed. We have a medium shot of them both near a door and talking to each other. We clearly identify their background by their voices and language which is hear to be french, 'Monsieur'. This then puts a stereotype on 'french maids' clearly shown onwards in the situation. When the older women says 'he pays double for double,' the camera edits to a high point where it is looking down to show the tag that she is holding, showing the evidence of the mans room and the two stars representing the two women. As the women go into the room, we find an oreintal man sitting down on the bed, dressed roughly in a sleeping gown. The background and the area of the room is enticingly inviting and could suggest what type of man this is. The camera has a long shot of him, futhermore to show the body language and custom that he is wearing. Then there is a long shot on the women, one standing nervously and the other confidently, the man says something and the girls look one way. We immediatley get to know what they look at as the camera transitions to a shot of money on a counter, helping us understand whats in store for the women. From there we clearly understand why the women are there. Moreover, we see the man holding the remote control as a side view and him pressing the button, after the camera goes onto the radio system and ranchy, upbeat music comes on, a very good edit to show the specfic actions that follow. We have a close of the orential man's face, showing the kind of experssion that is displayed and after us finding that it is the girls that he is looking at, a long shot on the maids. Somehow this creates a negative representation on this orentail man as we know he is paying for show girls. A lthough the fact that these two women are french and are maids, clearly gives the impression of 'french maids' which I had meantioned above. This also does not give a positive view on maids who are french and represent them to be 'slutty' which is not a good cliche.

Blackpool anaylsis on family, age and relationships (Meeting Steve) unfinished

All the way throughout the piece I identified various techniques which the director uses to portray the use of representations of age, family and relationships. At the start we have the camera on a man as a close up which pans to the woman, this helps determine the kind of staus that each character has seening as it pans from the father than to the mother suggesting authority in men. The background behind them is a nice, comfortable cream colour which may reflect their moods, even though it somehows means that they are disappointed when their daughter comes in with an older man. We also find that the scenery in front of them seems to be appear symmetrically in line especially with the bowl of fruit and drinks, it shows how orderly they are and they are concerned with keeping it pristine.  When this scene comes there is a distant sound of bells being rung and complete silence, we know this is heard from the characters, a diegtic sound so throughout we hear this untill the next two characters are introduced. This may symbolize the tension starting to a rise, especially when the bells ring. The slam of the door and of the characters walking in, is a very good technique seeing as the camera zooms into the parents so that the audience understands their feelings once seeing this as their expression changes. 
This is followed by the camera staying on the father, it may suggest who doesn't approve of this as all the other characters expression are the same but the fathers stands out. This may show the kind of authority he has within the family, as they might look up to him for approval. Afterwards we have them walking to the living room, and being met in a group of four with the men being in the same row and women vice versa. This could be applied to the sort of families which are seen in the media especially in comedies.
 Behind them, the surroundings are white and clean, showing that they keep their possessions well kept, suggesting that they don't look after any young kids or do not have them around. There is obviously a comparison as their moods do not reflect the color of their living room. As they sit down the father gets straight to talking and asking questions which he directs at the boyfriend, we see this as the camera has an over shoulder of both the father and boyfriend, this technique is very useful and effective as we get to look at the other character beside the character who is closer.The father's sarcastic voice shows the distain he has for the boyfriend, could mean he is jealous or not impressed, what we know about how old the boyfriend is this helps to understand why.


We get responding shots which are seen when the camera goes to the father than goes to the mother, from this we easily see the mothers reactions when the conversation turns ugly. It also corresponds to the important theme of family; mothers are the ones who you look up to for comfort. The boyfriend posture and body language is very relaxed as his legs are crossed in way in which seems to say he is 'not bothered', the camera shot of this is clearly seen and can be analysed. As we examine their clothing we find that the young couple seems to be dressed in colours that are dull and unattractive, especially the lady. Her dress sense is very grown up comparing to her mother who is very bright and young, suggests a very different approach to families background and sense. The father is also dressed brightly, somehow taking the interest in the 80s style, may suggest how he doesn't want grow up or that he is seen to be young looking by everyone around him, and so he has taken this on.These two sides of the couples , dull and colourful show the complete different personalities of both.As they start to get up we see the man just about to shake the fathers hand but unfortunately fails as the father rejects this offer and puts his hand in his pockets, this not only shows how disheartened he his but gives an insight to his personality.


After this we go into the scene where the mother and father are in the bedroom, the surroundings are are very clear, orangey cream, which may also reflect their mood. The curtains look big and stylised, could symbolise the intimate relationship that both characters have with each other, because to have a dull, draping curtain could ultimately change their feelings, especially as they are more close in the bedroom. The lady is in bed, but we don't see her get into bed, may signify the stereotype of mothers always in bed, or moisturising themselves before going to bed.
As we follow the man he undresses himself and falls into bed, there is a continuity shot were he falls and is then in bed as two separate shots, I find that is could mean how tired he is connecting with the issue of age and how old age you seem more tired out, this could be related here. The camera is mostly on him when he is laying in bed, but then the wife comes into view, but we find the husband not as content, an explantation of the feelings that are expressed in bed.


Overall there has been a number of examples which are there to use for the examining of age and family, this is shown throughout the various techniques.

How is gender represented?

All the way throughout the piece I identified variuos techniques which the director uses to portray the use of representations about genders. There many active and passive devices used to create a meaning throughout. The characters all had a purpose through the piece which made it even more interesting to understand and know. At the start I got to have more of an idea about the male character who got to lead the woman away as the camera gets to see a medium shot of this. Somehow this can show the type of authority that he has over her, as we know men in general are seen to be strong and supportive. The fact that she is being lead could suggest the role in which she displayed mostly because the 'women' are seen to be more supported by the 'men' this is clearly are judgement made in itself. After, we see the girl in the tractor who seems to have the hands on role with the knowledege that she is trying to distract the animal whose hunting down the man in the blue shirt. This act is seen as not normal as we do not see women in society mostly using a vechile like this, however this act portrays women to have different sides to her, as we afterwards find the type of clothes that she wears is not nessecarly common but it brings to light the type of dress sense many might be into. Her specfic role may be the helper as she seems to distract and help the other team member. The man she tries to help is seen as the leader as he was the one who made sure the team wasn't hurt by the animal and made sure it followed him. He was the one who was also involved in the action as he got to travel via the rope. The camera was also on him mostly throughout,could suggest how respected he is especially by his peers. His actions tell us that he may be the protaganist who helps his team mates when they are in danger, as he does dangerous actions to somehow save the team. Overall there was many visual convictions that were involved so that the audience knows exactly what goes on.

Generlised actions of the men walking are seen to be noraml as when all the characters came walking up to the camera, they all had their own kind of walk which helps understand the kind of personality they all have. This coincides with their type of uniform which also determines their kind of personality. When the camera pans throughout the cast we find, that they all have a particular part in the team. There is a man who is smartly dressed  and is saying various information about a particular area, we clearly know that this man is someone who delivers messages. His dress sense gives an idea of the intelligence that he upholds throughout.
The man in white with the gun appears to be the 'hero' in some sense as when he is holding the gun we get an idea that he has some authority and power within the group, his stance and posture could suggest the importance. Although, this can be debated that somehow he could be the 'helper' rather than the 'hero' because of how contained and serving he is, especially when the man in the blue orders him to do something.

Afterwards, we see a man and his custom is all ragedy and faded , this may represent danger as when we look on he has a gun in his hand, this sums up the type of personality that happens to shine through.

I cannot describe as such what kind of images portray my characters or my film but films, such as submarine and Twilight are just an example of the type of genre I want my film to be set as. The images of the posters reflect the type of personality each characters displays and that it helps the audience understand their motives. The feeling you get from these image aren't just serious and mysterious but interesting and exciting, this is exactly how I want the audience to feel when my characters are on full view. This helps create the charged atmosphere and emotions throughout.

Analyse on the three films on Friday 4th November.(Unfinished)

We first got to understand the term of what Protagonist meant as it involves a hero, a postitive character in the story or the main character who is at the centre of the film. This coincides with the 'anagonist' role which is vice versa and involves being the villian of the story. We also got understand what it is meant by media narrative and the narrative techniques applied in the text.
The narrative of the story changes through time which means more of the story ius added, this affects the ending of the story and concludes with the 'clear up' of the plot.
Enigma codes control how much we know of the story and effectively holds the audiences attention, it also creates mystery throughout the narrative.
Action codes are events in the story that we know are important in finding out the orginal plot, this develops the narrative and gives the onlooker something to think about. The story begins to progress after a serious of action codes which are easily identified.



As we carried on throughout the lesson we got to watch three different films, all with different motives and situations.
 Firstly we beagn watching Children of men, which have a very serouis and seral feel to it as it is set in the future. Just by watching the first few seconds of the film I had the urge to write down as many devices which was used, as there were a jumble of spoken words being said at once. This involved a blank screen which is a good technique to engage the audience and indulge them in the first few minutes, because we as the onlookers would be questioning on why there is a blank screen and why aren't there any pictures on display?

This had gone on for a few seconds there was a quick opening of people crowding round a tv, with people in the background walking up the streets, seeing as this was set in a mini shop. The news report of a dead boy rang out so that it was very clear for the rest of us to hear. There was a good technique there as when there was a blank screen first time the sound of the news report was close and intimate but when going to this scene the sound afterwards was very distant and far away, could suggest how far away a time that was. The fact that the camera is positioned in a way that the man who is ordering the coffee is at the centre. This clearly suggests the importance he has in the first scene rather than all the other characters. We follow him out the store and into the street afterwards.

This report hastily talks about a sudden event which has happened to a boy who had died at the young age of 18. This begins to develop curiosity among the audience as the concern for a man who died at a 'young' age turns to a heart breaking turning point. This could give us a hint about the rest of the film, so this effect is clearly a disequilibrium term.


All the characters have the same expression on their face as they look upon the sudden news report, gives a sense of despair and lose. We begin to feel sympathy for the event even though we are not in the scene, to add the effect to this there is the sound of wailing or crying which seems muffled but it is very effective towards this piece.





We seem to follow this man through the shop and so instantly know that this could possibly be the main character.









The background is greem and dusky, and we know this is a different time streme as the news reporter stated the time which they were in, '2027.' There is a lot in the mise en scene which help us determine the state of the film, the genre, and the target audience.

As we continue following this man who has a coffee in hand, the camera is clearly poistined on the other side of him, facing the shop. This is evidently done as after a few seconds, a sudden bomb is seen to go off and the sound of it gives of a shudder. This is definatley a good technique as the atmosphere was very calm and became tense when this sudden incident appeared. From this analysis, I find that the man we followed seemed to be the main character and possibly the protagonist. 

The actions codes were also fully displayed as the bomb could signify a trigger for an important event later on in the story, addtionally there are full enigma codes in this begining which creats suspense and curiosity.

We finally get the introduction to this film with the written language being displayed. The title is very simple and direct to suggest the type of film it will be and the kind of genre. After the audience just witnessed the incident, the atmosphere and emotions are began to change especially when there is a small serious pause.






For Batman, there was a series of events which had a numerous devices displayed. At the begining, the camera is panning towards a group of buildings with some active music in the background, this of course begins to alter our attention on the specfic genre that this film could be put through, and this is answered when we hear and see the gun being cocked. Action and enigma codes are present thourgout the start with the sound s being high pitched and clear. The lighting is positive with a high key note added on. We only see the accounts of antagonist characters being portrayed so we firstly do not have an idea of the a super hero film but we do know that this particular film has a situated genre to it. To the ending of the begiining we have a disequiliubrum which tries to stop the bulgary thourghout but dismissivly fails and gets shot. The part I found interesting to analyse was when all of the bulgaers were shot down by a man, this man had a mask on but when taken off the sound trac immeadiatly changed and played out a serious, almost dangerous music which helped determine the kind of character this was. Also by looking at his experssion it was easily understood that this was a villian, just by his sly, menacing face.

Preliminary Exercise evaluation (unfinished)

The exercise that we did was a challenge but because we all contributed to the work which was needed to make it successful it turned out to be a good piece of work. There were a number of things we had to think of before we started filming, especially the safety and storyboard.


Safety
There were many precautions which we found we had to be aware of. Firstly we knew we had to be  careful with the pod including how we handled it and how we positioned it throughout our time in the project.

This is a footage that I had taken ages ago before my film idea had arisen but I found that it would fit into my film. Although this is just the idea, it is good a beginning to help my fellow colleagues to get the idea for the start of my film.
